  • Stay in the kitchen when cooking on the stovetop.
  • Keep children 3 feet away from a hot oven/stove.
  • Keep the floor clear so you don't trip over kids, toys, pocketbooks or bags when carrying hot foods or liquids.
  • Keep knives out of reach of children.
  • Be careful with hot food and liquid, especially around kids. The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy or coffee could cause serious burns.
  • Don't let electric cords dangle off the counter within reach of children or pets.
  • Never leave children alone in a room with a lit candle, and keep matches and lighters out of reach.
  • Keep all doors and windows that could be used for an escape route clear of snow and ice.
  • Keep all vents - fireplace, dryer, furnace and oven - clear of snow, ice and debris.
  • Never use a blow torch to thaw frozen pipes.
  • Use flashlights, not candles, if you lose power.
  • Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet from heat sources; do not use your oven to heat your home.
