East River Road Incident

January 12, 2017
On January 12th, 2017 at 8:27 am, Fridley Police Officers were dispatched to the area of East River Rd NE and Island Park Dr NE for a report of a male who was overheard having a domestic dispute in the area. The caller reported that the male was leaving on foot, and he was observed placing a firearm in his pocket. Officers arrived in the area and noticed a male matching the suspect description walking northbound in the area of East River Rd NE at River Edge Way NE. As officers approached the suspect in their marked squad cars with emergency lights activated, the male removed a handgun from a shoulder holster and immediately took his own life. Police and Fire personnel attempted to render aid to the male, but he was deceased. No Fridley Police Officers discharged their weapons, and no officers were injured. Stevenson Elementary School, which is directly south of the incident location, was notified and went into a brief lockdown. After it was determined that there was no longer a threat to public safety, the school was notified and the lockdown was lifted. This case is under investigation by the Fridley Police Department and the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office.
